A Bold, Silver-Striped Statement Plant with Living Movement
Calathea orbifolia, commonly known as the Round Leaf Prayer Plant, is a striking tropical houseplant admired for its oversized, perfectly rounded leaves patterned with luminous silver and soft green striping. Its dramatic foliage makes it an instant focal point in living rooms, bedrooms, and offices.
Like other members of the prayer plant family, Calathea orbifolia displays fascinating leaf movement throughout the day. In bright conditions, the leaves open wide to absorb light. At night, they gently lift and fold upward in a “prayer” position — a natural rhythm known as nyctinasty that adds dynamic beauty to your indoor garden.

- Large Round Leaves: Broad, sculptural foliage with elegant silver striping.
- Living Movement: Leaves raise and lower daily in response to light.

Ed’s Care Guide
Care Level: Moderate
Light: Prefers medium to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch leaves. Tolerates lower light but growth may slow.
Water: Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. Allow the top inch to dry slightly between waterings. Bottom watering is highly recommended to prevent leaf spotting.
Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (50%+). Ideal for bathrooms or kitchens. Consider a humidifier for optimal leaf health.
Temperature: 60–85°F. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature swings.
Soil: Light, airy, slightly acidic mix with peat and perlite for proper drainage.
Feeding: Fertilize every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted balanced fertilizer.
Pruning: Remove brown or yellowing leaves at the base as needed.
Propagation: Root division during repotting.
Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and pets.
A Tropical Showpiece for Humid Spaces
Native to the rainforests of Bolivia, Calathea orbifolia evolved in warm, humid conditions under filtered canopy light. When given similar conditions indoors, it rewards growers with lush, full foliage and striking silver banding that looks almost hand-painted.
Its bold texture and gentle daily leaf movement make it one of the most captivating foliage plants available for indoor spaces.
